D38999/26 Mating Connectors: D38999/20 vs D38999/24
2026-10-17T16:31:18.661Z
A D38999/26 straight plug can be paired with an appropriate D38999/20 wall-mount receptacle or D38999/24 jam-nut receptacle. The choice between /20 and /24 concerns how the receptacle mounts to the equipment. The remaining part-number fields determine whether the proposed halves are a suitable mating configuration.
For a D38999/26 mating connector inquiry, send the complete plug reference. “/26 plug, matching socket required” leaves the shell, insert, contact gender and keying unresolved.

/20 or /24: decide at the panel
Amphenol's Series III reference literature identifies /20 as a wall-mount receptacle, /24 as a jam-nut receptacle and /26 as a straight plug. [1] Begin the selection with the actual panel drawing.
| Decision | D38999/20 | D38999/24 |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting approach | Flange mounting with mounting holes | Single-hole mounting retained by a jam nut |
| Drawing to request | Flange, hole pattern and applicable panel interface | Cutout, anti-rotation detail and permitted panel thickness |
| Installation question | Can the flange hardware be fitted and serviced? | Is there access and clearance for the retaining nut? |
| Existing equipment | Retain the specified mounting interface unless a change is approved | Retain the specified mounting interface unless a change is approved |
| Mating review | Full configuration still required | Full configuration still required |
The connector-side choice and the panel-side choice need to agree. A receptacle may be a mating candidate for the plug while still being unsuitable for the existing panel.

Wall-mount form: the flange and mounting holes are visible.

Jam-nut form: the retaining hardware is visible. Configuration examples, not dimensional drawings.

Read the full code before selecting the opposite half
Use this reference as a worked ordering example:
D38999/26WA35SN
| Segment | Meaning in this example |
|---|---|
| D38999/26 | Series III straight plug |
| W | Service/material-and-finish class; check its applicable requirements |
| A | Shell-size code, corresponding to size 9 |
| 35 | Insert arrangement; with this shell size, the 9-35 layout |
| S | Socket contacts |
| N | Normal keying position |
The manufacturer's ordering guide supplies the code meanings. Its catalog identifies the 9-35 arrangement as six size-22D contacts. [2, 3] The arrangement number 35 is not the number of contacts.
Do not confuse the A shell-size code in this example with alternate uses of A in another field or product family. Preserve the whole reference when copying it into an inquiry.
Two candidate pairings—and one mismatch
For the example plug above, the following references illustrate the selection process:
| Plug requirement | Receptacle candidate | Review result |
|---|---|---|
| D38999/26WA35SN | D38999/20WA35PN | Matching code fields provide a candidate pair; confirm the flange installation and applicable drawings. |
| D38999/26WA35SN | D38999/24WA35PN | Matching code fields provide a candidate pair; confirm the jam-nut installation and applicable drawings. |
| D38999/26WA35SN | D38999/24WA35SN | Both specify socket contacts; do not select this as the intended complementary electrical pair. |
These are catalog-code examples, not physically tested pairs, stock offers or approved substitutes. No fit test was performed for this article.
The same method applies when a drawing specifies a pin-contact plug: the receptacle needs the corresponding socket-contact configuration, alongside the other interface checks. Plug/receptacle describes the shell form; pin/socket describes the contacts. [2]
What can still go wrong after the codes look right?
A good quotation should separate four decisions.
Mating interface. Record series, shell, insert, contact gender and keying for both halves. A reference to “38999” without the series is insufficient; the manufacturer's reference guide distinguishes the interfaces of Series I, II and III. [2]
Installation. Compare panel thickness, cutout, access, connector projection and the space behind the panel. If the connector must pass through a tight opening, show that restriction in the inquiry.
Harness completion. State whether you need contacts, rear accessories, caps, seals or other items. Ask for an included-parts list. An assembly photograph can help, but the order should identify what is being purchased.
Purchase approval. State any manufacturer, qualification, traceability or program requirements. A connector that can be considered for a new ground-test fixture is not automatically an approved replacement in an existing airborne installation.
This separation makes it easier to see why a quotation is still pending. It also prevents an installation problem from being hidden behind the phrase “matching connector.”
Show the installed environment, not only the mating face

For a panel-mounted connection, an overview can reveal the questions a close-up misses: rear access, cable routing and adjacent equipment. Include the local installation view or drawing with the two connector references.

Delivery-sensitive sourcing in the 2026 supply-chain environment
IATA's 7 June 2026 outlook discussed Middle East disruption and air-cargo constraints. [4] For connector procurement, the practical implication is to distinguish supplier dispatch date, transport assumptions and required arrival date. This is a planning recommendation—not a claim that D38999 demand or search interest has increased.
When a schedule is tight, request the complete pair and accessories together. Ask which configuration is actually available, which documents accompany it and what still requires confirmation.
Request a matched plug-and-receptacle quotation
Send both complete references, or the known plug number plus the equipment-interface drawing. Add quantity, required arrival date, delivery destination, cable details and whether original-only procurement or evaluated alternatives are acceptable.
Tradin Connect can review the requirement and prepare a project quotation for the proposed configuration and accessories.

FAQ
Is D38999/24 the mating connector for every D38999/26?
No. It identifies a receptacle mounting style. The complete configuration must suit the plug and the installation.
Can /20 replace /24 on an existing panel?
Do not assume a mounting replacement. Compare the applicable installation drawings and obtain approval for any panel or hardware changes.
Does a matching pin count establish compatibility?
No. The layout, shell, keying, contact system and other applicable requirements still need review.
Are the example pairs ready to order?
They are ordering-code illustrations. A quotation must identify the actual proposed items, quantities, included accessories and required documents.
